Anniversary Celebrations

An anniversary is commonly associated with weddings. Married persons who regard the date of their marriage as important may mark the yearly date of their wedding in some special way.

Broader groups in society, especially the families, and even more especially the children of such a couple, may help to celebrate such occasions; this is particularly common on the 40th, 50th, and 60th annivs.

Retailers (especially jewellers), sensing a profit opportunity, have encouraged gift-giving on such special days, and may often suggest a hierarchy of types of gifts to reflect the importance of longer years of marriage (and perhaps of greater ability to purchase more expensive gifts).

Standard associations of such anniversaries have come to include:

* 25th year: silver
* 30th year: pearl
* 35th year: coral
* 40th year: ruby
* 45th year: sapphire
* 50th year: gold
* 55th year: emerald
* 60th year: diamond
* 70th year: platinum

Diamond anniversaries were formerly very rare occasions reserved for the 75th anniversary. Queen Victoria's 1897 celebration of a Diamond Jubilee for the length of her reign popularised the use of diamond to commemorate 60 years instead.

Other traditions introduce specific gifts for every single year; in certain German traditions some half- and quarter-anniversaries are also celebrated, and the suggested gifts can become quite bizarre and extravagant.

A mensiversary (from the Latin mensis and versarius -- the words for month and to turn, meaning (re)turning monthly) -- is a day that commemorates and/or celebrates a past event that occurred on the same day of the month as the initial event. For example, the first event is the initial occurrence or, if planned, the inaugural of the event; one month later would be the first mensiversary of that event.

Anniversaries of nations are usually given by the number of years elapsed in Latin words or Roman numerals.
