Bachelorette Party

bachelorette party, westchester limousine

In the United States, it has become a common practice for bachelorette parties to consist of a bar tour combined with a scavenger hunt, which usually has a risque or erotic theme. The bride-to-be is invariably dressed in some fashion so that everyone in the bar instantly recognizes her as being the subject of the hen party. Usually, she will be wearing a wedding veil and a t-shirt, which is to be signed by guys she and her friends meet in the bars that night. The bachelorette is usually quite intoxicated by the end of the night, as both her friends and the guys she meets in the bars will continuously buy her drinks.

In some American bars, it is not unusual to see several bachelorette parties held on the same night night on summer weekends. Occasionally the girls, drunk and loud, would fight.

In Canada, a hen party is often known by the term "stagette".

A Wild Bachelorette Party!

Girls Gone Wild: A Wild Bachelorette Party!

It was in the 80s when the rise of "bachelorette parties" for women were noted, thus signaling a new era of sexual liberation for the modern woman. Yet the wild bachelorette party of old seems to have become wilder and freer today. All the standard elements of male sexual debauchery are there - strippers, booze, sex games. If not for the word "bachelorette" one would think it's an all-male party doing the nasty for the last time.

It's called the bachelorette party and it's usually what you'd expect: a boisterous night complete with male strippers, drinking, dancing, laughter. Nothing overtly naughty - just a girls' night out. It's a night for female bonding.

"Bachelorette parties are hyper-sexualized rituals," writes lead researcher Beth Montemurro, PhD, a sociology professor at Penn State University's Abington Campus. In fact, 81% contained a sexual element or theme. In half the parties, the bride-to-be was dressed with a veil - and decorated with condoms and phallic novelties, she reports.

Wild Bachelorette Party Paraphernalia?

Penis gummies, penis mugs, penis straws, penis sippy cups, penis cakes, penis cookies - all variations of phallic symbols and sex toys - were the evening's theme. Gag gifts like edible underwear, massage oil, penis-shaped pasta, penis-shaped thermoses, and sex books were standard fare.

The bachelorette party often has a "task list" for the bride-to-be: licking tequila off a guy's body, getting men to suck a piece of candy off a "candy shirt," getting phone numbers from strange guys, getting a lap dance from a male stripper.

While friends howled and were delighted by the lap dancers, some brides-to-be were clearly embarrassed, Montemurro reports.

However, she observed a couple of women going further - kissing strange men, sometimes "intimately," which the women's friends found offensive, she adds.

How Wild A Bachelorette Party Is!

However, there is "a huge range" in the types of parties. Some were just a girls' night out, perhaps at a dance club. Other bachelorette parties were much more sexual, with strippers - as in Montemurro's study.

Caution: Wild Bachelorette Party Ahead

If you're invited to a bachelorette party, inquire ahead about the theme, advises Nadine Kaslow, PhD, professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at Emory University in Atlanta.

"Like everything in life, the issue is extremes," Kaslow adds. "If people get really out of control and do unsafe things, that's obviously not OK. But there's no reason why sexual expression needs to be taboo. It's a healthy attitude. And as long as it's not extreme, the bachelorette party helps get rid of the double standard."
