Mother's Day

Mother's Day is a holiday honouring mothers, celebrated (on various days) in many places around the world. Mothers often receive gifts on this day.

Mother's Day is a strange time of year for mail in many countries. In 1973, mail delivery through the U.S. Postal Service was delayed for eight days because of the amount of mail.[citation needed] Telephone networks are also at their busiest on Mother's Day. Mother's Day is the number one holiday for flowers purchased throughout the year.

As Mother's Day approaches we begin thinking of the kind of gift we'd give that special woman in our life. Mother's Day bouquets made with roses and other flowers are popular choices but do you know you can have a Mother's Day bouquet created without using fresh flowers? If your mom is a different kind of gal or might be allergic to pollen you can choose a Mother's Day bouquet of cookies or an adorable bear carrying spring flowers for your mom.

For a Mother's Day bouquet of delicious cookies, you can either bake them or order them online. To bake them your self here is the recipe for Mother's Day cookie bouquet:

Mother's Day Bouquet
Source: Better Homes and Gardens

Makes about 36 cookies
Prep: 30 minutes
Chill: 3 hours
Bake: 8 minutes

1 cup butter (no substitutes), softened
1 8-ounce package cream cheese, softened
2 cups sugar
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 egg
1 teaspoon vanilla
3-1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1/4 cup small multicolored decorative candies
Wooden sticks
Ribbon (optional)

1. Beat butter and cream cheese in a mixing bowl with an electric mixer on medium to high speed for 30 seconds. Add sugar and baking powder; beat until combined, scraping sides of bowl occasionally. Beat in egg and vanilla until combined. Beat in as much flour as you can with the mixer. Stir in remaining flour and decorative candies with a wooden spoon. Divide dough in half. Cover and chill for 3 to 24 hours or until easy to handle.

2. Roll each portion of dough on a lightly floured surface until 1/4-inch thick. Cut with a floured 2-1/2 to 3-1/2-inch flower-shaped cookie cutter. Place cutouts 1 inch apart on an ungreased cookie sheet. Tuck a wooden stick under the center of each cutout. Press dough down slightly so that the dough bakes around the stick.

3. Bake in a 375 degree F oven for 8 to 10 minutes or until edges are firm and bottoms are very lightly browned. Carefully remove cookies and cool on a wire rack. If desired, tie a ribbon around each stick. Makes about 36 cookies.

3. Fold the card paper lengthwise so that it measures 5 by 14 inches and cut it in half, making two 5-by-7-inch cards.

4. Print at the top of your card, "Happy Mother's Day," and at the bottom, "A Bouquet Just for You." (Image 1)

5. Attach flower seed packets to the front of the card like a collage, using a removable adhesive. (Image 2)

6. Open the card and attach one glove to each side of the card with removable adhesive. (Image 3)

7. Print at the top of card around the gloves, "Your hands have filled my life with ..." and list all around the card the things your mother has done for you. (Image 4)

8. Attach more seed packets or small packets of fertilizer on the back of the card with a removable adhesive.

* You can also use a pretty card and just attach the gloves and seed packets on the open pages of the card.
* Use your own words to express how you feel about the special person in your life.
* If gardening is not her thing, make a cooking, spa or herbal tea card using the same principle as above.

* Use only a removable adhesive to attach items to the card.
