New Year's Eve

New Year's Eve is December 31, the final day of the Gregorian year, and the day before New Year's Day, New Year's Eve is a separate observance from the observance of New Year's Day. In 20th-century Western practice, the celebration involves partying until the moment of the transition of the year at midnight. Drinking champagne is also a major part of the festivities. Within many cultures the use of fireworks and other noise making is a major part of the celebration in cities such as Berlin, New York City, Sydney, London, Paris, Rio de Janeiro, Toronto, and Tokyo. New Year's Eve is a public non-working holiday in the following countries, among others: France, Australia, Argentina, Brazil, Mexico, Greece, New Zealand, the Philippines, and Venezuela.

Chicago New Year's Eve Fireworks

When: Dec 2006 (annual)
Where: Buckingham Fountain
Cost: Free
Opening Hours: 10pm

The skies over Chicago explode with colour, light and noise on New Year's Eve as pyrotechnicians launch a huge array of fireworks in Grant Park. Revellers come together at Buckingham Fountain and in the surrounding park. The celebration begins at 10pm with recorded music, followed by the countdown and a huge firework display choreographed to music to welcome the new year.

If you're going to be anywhere in Chicago on New Year's Eve, checking out the fireworks and their reflection in Lake Michigan has got to be high on the list.

Countdowns also take place at Navy Pier and the Lincoln Park Zoo — the latter starts early for those with little ones. If you want to get a jump on your resolution to lead a healthier life, join the United for Peace athletes for a 5K run at the Heartland Café at 8 p.m.
