In the United States, a prom, short for promenade, is a formal dance held at the end of the years of high school and college, called junior prom and senior prom respectively. In British English such an event would be called a ball, although in Canada, Australia, and New Zealand it is also often called a formal. In Australian schools the terms used are either formal or sometimes as Leaver's Dinner, usually so when the night includes a meal. In Ireland it is known as a debs (an abbreviation of debutante ball). In the U.S. a "formal" is typically a similar dance that is held by a fraternity or sorority affiliated with a certain college or university. In Australia, the term "prom" has also come into sparse usage and in Britain it is becoming widespread, because of US influence. The name is derived from the late ninteenth century practice of a Promenade ball. The end of year tradition stemmed from the Graduation Ball tradition.

80s Prom Theme

The Awesome 80s Prom

In the movies of the 80s prom nights always figured last in the sequences. It served as the setting for the movie’s climactic scenes when the nice guy or geeky nerd gets the girl and the bully or wicked rival gets his comeuppance. This 80s prom scene figure within the same plot seen in present teen movies: good guy/good girl is in love with the popular guy or girl, but is hindered by the resident bitch or bully who also likes the same girl/guy. As a tribute to the 80s prom scenes in classic 80s films, Ken Davenport developed a play called “The Awesome 80s Prom”, an audience interactive environmental experience.

In the style of Tony n' Tina's Wedding, The Awesome 80s Prom throws audience members and actors together for Wanaget High School's 1989 senior prom. Audience members are encouraged to dress up for the occasion and come ready to dance and "party like it's 1989." Characters in the show include the Captain of the Football Team, the Asian Exchange Student, the Geek, and the hottie Head Cheerleader.

All of these 80s prom characters are competing for Prom King and Queen. And just like on "American Idol", the audience decides who wins, all while moonwalking to retro hits like "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" and "Wake Me Up Before You Go Go!"

All the teen dramas happening in an 80s prom night come alive at The Awesome 80s Prom. From a suggestion given at its website, The Awesome 80s Prom can also be a great way to bring the 80s prom scene to your theme party. It’s the ideal place for your Bachelorette Party, Sweet 16 Party, Class Reunion, or Anniversary.

The Awesome 80s Prom has been featured on television on WNBC'S Weekend Today Show, CBS's The Early Show, Fox 5 News and Fuji Television as well as in print in The New York Times, The NY Daily News, New York Magazine, Playgirl, and many others. The Awesome 80s Prom site can be found at
