In the United States, a prom, short for promenade, is a formal dance held at the end of the years of high school and college, called junior prom and senior prom respectively. In British English such an event would be called a ball, although in Canada, Australia, and New Zealand it is also often called a formal. In Australian schools the terms used are either formal or sometimes as Leaver's Dinner, usually so when the night includes a meal. In Ireland it is known as a debs (an abbreviation of debutante ball). In the U.S. a "formal" is typically a similar dance that is held by a fraternity or sorority affiliated with a certain college or university. In Australia, the term "prom" has also come into sparse usage and in Britain it is becoming widespread, because of US influence. The name is derived from the late ninteenth century practice of a Promenade ball. The end of year tradition stemmed from the Graduation Ball tradition.

Finding The Right Plus-Size Prom Dress

The Sexy Plus-Size Prom Dress

Attending your prom will be one of the most memorable nights of your life, and of course you want to look fashionable while youíre there. Finding a plus-size prom dress, however, can be quite difficult, if you want to look stylish while still remaining within your budget. There are tons of classic looks for plus-size prom dresses that you canít go wrong with, but thereís also room for experimentation with colors and fabric. Whatever your style, youíre sure to find a great plus-size prom dress for your curvy figure if you follow these simple steps.

In order to obtain that stylish look you crave, there are many things to consider when choosing a plus-size prom dress. For plus sizes, ball gowns with long, tulle skirts are always a hot commodity. Theyíre both timeless and sexy and will make you the envy of all the prom goers. Additionally, choosing a plus-size prom dress that shows off a little skin can be sexy, but thereís a fine line between sexy and trashy. Pick a dress that shows off one of your best assets in a tasteful way, and donít be surprised if you end up the belle of the ball.

Borrowing from a classic bridal look, pin-up skirts (or bustles) are becoming very popular for the plus-size prom dress. Youíll be the talk of the dance floor when you show up in one of these hot little numbers! Whatís more, they look great on plus sizes, and are one of the best ideas when shopping for a plus-size prom dress. Halters are always a good choice as well, because they give you the coverage and support you need. You can even accessorize with a cute shrug or shawl.

Choosing a plus-size prom dress that has surprising little details can also work wonders. Ruching, or adding a ruffle or pleat of lace, muslin, or other fine fabric to trim your plus-size prom dress, is very in right now, and can add an unexpected element of style to your look. Plus, hi-low hemlines are also stylish, and the contrasting hem really helps draw the focus towards your best assets.

When selecting a plus-size prom dress, you must also keep color in mind. Always choose a color that works well with your complexion. Black is always hot, and the right dress can enhance your figure and allow you to work it like the dancing diva you are. A black-and-white combination is also sexy and classic. Of course, bright colors are fashionable right now as well. Think canary yellow, bright pink, coral, mango, etc. Pretty much any tropical color can work wonders for your figure and make you stand out the moment you enter the room.

Accessorize your beautiful plus-size prom dress with strappy metallic sandals, glittery heels or sparkly flats. Shawls, shrugs, and handbags are quite stylish now as well, especially handbags in a surprising print, like polka dots. Remember to choose accessories that donít detract from your prom dress and complement, not clash, with your overall look for the evening. Shopping for a plus-size prom dress doesnít have to be difficult, and with the right tips in mind you should be able to find a great looking and affordable plus-size prom dress to flatter your figure.
