School Prom

In the United States, a prom, short for promenade, is a formal dance held at the end of the years of high school and college, called junior prom and senior prom respectively. In British English such an event would be called a ball, although in Canada, Australia, and New Zealand it is also often called a formal. In Australian schools the terms used are either formal or sometimes as Leaver's Dinner, usually so when the night includes a meal. In Ireland it is known as a debs (an abbreviation of debutante ball). In the U.S. a "formal" is typically a similar dance that is held by a fraternity or sorority affiliated with a certain college or university. In Australia, the term "prom" has also come into sparse usage and in Britain it is becoming widespread, because of US influence. The name is derived from the late ninteenth century practice of a Promenade ball. The end of year tradition stemmed from the Graduation Ball tradition.

High School After Prom Ideas

High School After Prom Ideas
By Jennifer Foote

The prom is memorable for many high school students. There are some students who spend all year planning for this one night. While the prom is a fun and exciting night it is also one where teenagers can find themselves in dangerous situations.

After the prom is when most teenagers run the risk of getting themselves into trouble or placing themselves in potentially dangerous situations. Many high schools organize an after the prom party. An after the prom party tends to take place at a safe location with a number of teacher and parent chaperones. Most after the prom parties are paid for by prom fundraisers and donations. There are some cases where a school just cannot afford to hold an after the prom party. If this is the case then you may want to consider establishing a plan with your child.

Since some, but not all teenagers, experiment or at least consider experimenting with sex or alcohol on prom night you may want to come up with safe after prom alternatives. One of those alternatives could include hosting a small get together at your own home. Hosting a small party is a great way to offer your child, their date, and maybe even their other friends a safe place to hang out. This would give you the opportunity to keep a close eye on your child, but at the same time allow them to still have fun. There are many parents who have had luck letting their child and their friend watch movies, play games, or listen to music in another area of the house.

One thing that you will have to consider when hosting your own miniature after the prom party at your home is whether or not everyone will be able to spend the night. Many proms do not end until eleven or midnight; therefore, you may or may not want guests to spend the night. If you intend on having both male and female guests stay the night you may want to consider establishing ground rules or speaking to the parents of all teenagers that will be present.

If you are uncomfortable hosting your own after the prom party or do not have the space in your home to do so there are other alternatives. If you have land you could have an outdoor adventure that may include camping. You are also encouraged to speak with any local business owners that offer entertainment. Even though most movie theaters, restaurants, or bowling alleys close before early morning you may be able to convenience a business owner to keep their business open earlier. This tactic is often successful in small towns where the business owner may be familiar with high school students or they may even be a parent themselves.

It is not uncommon for a parent to worry about their child on prom night; however, most of the time you do not have to be worried. Not all kids will experiment with alcohol or sex on their prom night. If you are still concerned about your child's whereabouts and activities after the prom consider using the above mentioned after the prom party alternatives to ease your mind.
