Superbowl

The Super Bowl is one of the most-watched U.S. television broadcasts of the year, attracting many companies to spend millions of dollars on commercials. This has caused the starting time of the game to be pushed back later and later, to ensure the Sunday night prime time audience on the East Coast. The last true day game (which ended before local sunset) of the series was Super Bowl XI in January 1977.

In addition, many popular singers and musicians have performed during the Super Bowl's pre-game and halftime ceremonies. This is the second-largest U.S. food consumption day, following Thanksgiving.

The Janet Jackson Super Bowl Picture

Let's reqind for abit and look back at the most controversial stunt ever seen on TV. Nope it did not involve a man on a motorcycle or a jackass trying to kill himself with stupid stunts. It involves Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake in a "wardrobe malfunction" - a term that has become famous as the two stars. I suspect Webster has already taken note of this phrase.

Since the 2004 Super Bowl Janet Jackson's picture with Justin Timberlake has been the most searched image on the web. Her name and Justin's are the most searched terms. Many writers, bloggers and commentators has given the incident colorful euphemisms that would describe the pair's antics on stage. Besides "wardrobe malfunction", it has been called as the "nipplegate", a humorous take on the scandal involving an amateur burglary and a President in disgrace.

The FCC has already did its duty by investigating the Super Bowl scandal, and subsequently installed more constricting rules on TV and radio stations regarding sexually suggestive or explicit scenes/segments. Likewise with shows that showcases too much material on terrorist attacks in light of the 9/11 horror that the US faced in 2001.

The CBS network, MTV (the halftime show producer), and the two stars involved, Justin Timberlake and Janet Jackson, have already issued their respective statements of apology to the public. Yet that picture of Janet Jackson at Super Bowl 2004 will stay in internet archives and in the memories of Americans for a long, long time.
